ABOUT

JUDGE

RANDY

BRANDT

Randy Brandt has been an attorney for nearly 30 years and has 21 years of judicial experience. Randy worked his way up the judicial ladder and has heard tens of thousands of cases over his judicial career. Before he was a judge, Randy was a small business owner for over 10 years.

During his extensive judicial service, Randy has gained knowledge about the judicial system and learned, most importantly, about people. He is a skilled and seasoned judicial veteran and is uniquely qualified for making the tough decisions necessary to keep our families and community safe.

Randy’s judicial and life experience combined with dedication to our community, make him uniquely and distinctively qualified to again serve our community as a judge.

Randy is a lifelong resident of Spokane and he graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in 1969 and Gonzaga University in 1974. He began working in the real estate business and maintained brokerages in Washington and was licensed in Idaho, supervising over 60 agents. He entered law school in 1985, graduating in 1988.  This business experience gave Randy immense management experience and skills, along with extensive interaction with community organizations, all of which have provided him unique insights and understanding of people and behavior – attributes crucial to being an excellent Judge. Randy attended the Gonzaga Army ROTC program, along with the Loyola Guard including dignitary protection.

After graduating from Gonzaga Law School in 1988, Randy opened his law practice and in 1993 began serving as a Spokane County District Court Judge Pro-Tem.  In the subsequent 21 years Brandt heard tens of thousands of cases, with hundreds of attorneys appearing before him during his service as a Judge Pro-Tem (1993-2003) District Court Commissioner (2003-2009), Administrative Law Judge (2010-2011), and Spokane County District Court Judge (2011- 2014). During this time Randy served as a visiting Judge in several Washington counties.

As Presiding Judge, Randy held a position in the Spokane Regional Law & Justice Council. Serving in and working to improve the therapeutic courts and reduce the use of jail when appropriate has been a passion of Randy Brandt.

Randy’s service has included virtually all phases of judicial dockets including mental health, domestic violence, anti-harassment, traffic infractions, misdemeanor and felony arraignments to name a few.  He is a graduate of both the Washington State Judicial College (2004, 2012 and 2014) and the National Judicial College (2009). Randy presided over the Mental Health Docket, a therapeutic court. He received advanced training in issues involving military personnel, including PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and Military Sexual Assault.  In addition, Randy completed extensive training before hearing Domestic Violence cases.

Randy is clearly recognized for his administrative and leadership skills, as evidenced by his election by his peers as Acting Presiding Judge in 2011-2014, then as Presiding in 2014. He was instrumental in developing a system in which documents were digitized for use in various dockets, reducing the need to bring inmates into the courtroom, saving taxpayer dollars and increasing safety for courtroom attendees and moving towards a paperless docket. Randy orchestrated the use of in-home computers for judges to consider search warrants requested by law enforcement, saving countless hours for law enforcement, the court and citizens.  This also results in reducing the use of the jail for those who are eligible for release.

But beyond his nearly three decades of legal and judicial experience, Randy brings a wealth of life experience and service in our community to the Bench, ranging from Camp Fire Boys and Girls, Exchange Club, Spokane Central Lions Club, Spokane River Association, President Spokane Regional Law Enforcement Museum and Honorary Commander Fairchild Air Force Base.  Randy was given honorary membership in the Fairchild Air Force Base Bar Association. For several years, Randy has served throughout Spokane County as a judge in local high schools DUI Mock Crash program, striving to curb drinking and driving. Randy has been an instructor at Continuing Education training for attorneys.
